Steve Hughes Car Sales based in Welshpool was nominated for a National Council of Work Experience Award this month, following the success of a student work placement.
Lewis Richards GO Wales Work Placement Coordinator at Aberystwyth University nominated Steve who was shortlisted for the Small Business Category.
The annual awards scheme is designed to encourage and reward organisations - whatever their size or industry - that display good practice in work experience.
Huw Evans, a student at Cardiff University, did a work placement with the business last summer. His project involved undertaking marketing and admin tasks for Steve Hughes and also working on the accounts for Welshpool Town Football Club, where Steve is the Chairman and MD.
As a result of the placement Huw was appointed as Financial Director for Welshpool football club. He says:
“I owe a lot to Steve Hughes as he has supported my development and encouraged me to better myself.”
Steve is delighted to have been nominated for the award:
“I am very pleased and excited to be short listed for a National Work Experience award. Quite often smaller businesses can offer excellent work experience opportunities and it's great that this is being recognised.”
“With a small business everybody from the MD down to the cleaner has to pull together as a team, which is good experience for any student or graduate.”
The awards took place in London and although Steve didn't win the top prize he was highly commended.
