Angie Sarah Contestabile
16 graduates from across Wales recently took part in the GO Wales Graduate Academy at the University of Wales Lampeter to boost their career prospects.
This is the third Graduate Academy to take place in Wales; the programme included two weeks residential training at Lampeter and 4 weeks work experience with a local employer and is underpinned by an Institute of Leadership and Management qualification to give the graduates the skills and confidence needed to prosper in a management role.
Angie Contestabile graduated in July 2009 and left University as a prospering graduate however after months of job applications and rejections she soon felt like another number in government statistics. Angie applied for the GO Wales Graduate Academy and was given the chance to gain experience in two different environments:
“My first workplace experience was based at Ten Green Bottles; a small business specialising in crafting products from recycled glass. I was responsible for advising the MD on travel logistics and international communications. I also liaised with overseas business contacts and developed reports.”
“I also had the opportunity to gain experience with Kirsty Williams AM for Brecon and Radnorshire and Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats. This was an amazing experience, where I met many politically famous people. I attended plenary meetings in the devolved Welsh Assembly Government, press conferences and interviews.”
As well as the skills and knowledge gained from the work experience Angie has also worked towards an Institute of Leadership and Management qualification:
“I feel that the ILM course itself was the best thing that I have ever done! The teaching and support I have received and continue to receive has been fantastic. The Graduate Academy has allowed me to gain so much more than experience and a qualification; I now have a network of employment contacts, great references and a group of friends that I will certainly be staying in touch with.”
As a result Angie now has now secured a position as a Project Assistant with SNAP Cymru organising fundraising events, recruitment and volunteer training.
