"As a result of the taster Treberfedd Farm is now paying me to write text for the booklet, they have gained a useful resource for their visitors and given me a unique project that I can show to future employers."
Emma-Jayne Halford was looking for a very specific type of work experience when she approached GO Wales, as an undergraduate of Ancient History Emma wanted something related to history that would give her the chance to make an informed decision about her future career.
“As I am currently undergoing an Ancient History degree which has limited options of jobs specifically related to it, I took part in this experience to explore different jobs within research. During my taster I was given the opportunity to work off-site conducting research in Ceredigion Archives, National Library of Wales and Coflein all in Aberystwyth and collating the evidence at home. However, in order to keep track of my progress I would return to Treberfedd Farm and show my progress and explore further avenues.”
“The taster has provided me with several new skills; researching and accessing documents about the history of a place and its buildings; the people who used to live there and also making sure that this is interesting for both the employer and the public. This gave me the chance to use a variety of different sources such as census' and old documents.”
“Although this experience was very interesting and has taught me various archival and research skills which could help with further genealogy studies, it requires a person who is patient and passionate about this career as often many gaps appear in the research and many questions are left unanswered. This experience has therefore been very successful as I enjoyed the project and learning the new skills but also believe this would not be a job I would go for.”
“As a result of the taster Treberfedd Farm is now paying me to write text for the booklet, they have gained a useful resource for their visitors and given me a unique project that I can show to future employers. Later on this year I will be undertaking some teaching experience/observation at a comprehensive school in History and Classical Civilization which is more related to my study. After I have done this I should hopefully know which route or career I would like to go into."
