Natalie Stewart; a student about to begin her final year in BA Hons Fine Art at the University of Wales, Newport has spent the summer undertaking work experience to boost her employability skills giving her an edge over other students. Natalie wanted to utilise the skills developed from her course to gain practical experience within graphic design. Here is Natalie’s story about her Work Taster experience:
“I found out about GO Wales through the library at my university, I wanted the opportunity to complete a Work Taster so I contacted GO Wales. The GO Wales process was really easy to use and very quickly I had secured a two week Work Taster at Newport City Homes. This taster has provided me with fantastic experience within graphic design and I now have an idea of what it would be like to work in that area along with the skills needed to fulfil that role.”
“As a result of my taster I have produced real life examples of work for my portfolio which includes; brand redevelopment through the re-design of logos, presentation design and screen adverts. I have also developed my skills in a number of software packages and web design. This has boosted my confidence and skills within design and has enhanced my creativity, this will help greatly with my final year.”
“If anyone is considering getting work experience I would definitely recommend others to take advantage of the GO Wales taster scheme. My team members were fantastic and taught me a lot about working in the design industry. I have learnt so much in two weeks that has been invaluable to me, it has also provided me with a competitive edge when applying for jobs in future and helped me progress into my final year. I was rewarded a certificate on completion of the taster which I can now show to employers.”
