Paul Cummins (Automotive Engineering)

Darrian Cars manufacture the Darrian T9/90 Sports Cars which have successfully competed in tarmac and forest rallies, rally cross, sprints, hill climbs and circuit races since 1985.

Project objective

Team Duffee Engineering required a Motorsport Engineer to design a replacement rear suspension system for the Darrian sports car.

Project outcome

Paul demonstrated a good level of ability throughout the placement; he helped to record accurate measuring for both suspension systems. Tim Duffee, Managing Director explains:

“Paul's particular project was to prepare the ground to develop a new rear suspension assembly for the Darrian Car. This entailed the accurate measuring and recording of results of both the front and rear suspension systems.”

“Paul's placement has given him a practical insight into the subject of vehicle dynamics, engine technology and transmissions. He demonstrated good practical ability over a wide range of tasks. He was very motivated and always gave his best.”

“We are positive about graduates; they bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to our company.”

Paul's placement helped him to gain more knowledge and skills to assist him with his final year at University:

“The placement couldn't have gone any better, the employer was very patient and always willing to answer any questions I had. My placement was directly related to my degree so what I learnt will be of great use to my studies.”

“I achieved exactly what I set out to achieve, I wanted to apply the theory I learnt in University to the practical application in the workshop. I brought myself up to speed on areas which I needed to learn more about such as suspension technology and carried out a project using suspension software.”

“I learnt a lot about rally car preparation and got hands on experience in metal fabrication and engine management software. It has given me a very good understanding and appreciation of the amount of work and team effort involved in successfully running a rally team and will definitely benefit me in the future.”
