In the summer of 2002 the well preserved remains of a mediaeval ship were discovered during excavation works for a new Arts Centre on the banks of the River Usk in central Newport.
A project to restore the ship is ongoing Jonathan McQueen completed a work taster with Newport Council on the Newport Ship project in the field of Nautical Archaeology. He undertook this work taster over a period of five days.
The taster was organised with the help of one of the lecturers at Lampeter University Nigel Nayling who is an Archaeological Consultant to the project.
“My time working on the Newport Ship project gave me the opportunity to learn about a range of interesting areas including:”
- Induction to Ship and Computer programs
- Cleaning ship Timbers
- Manual Handling and Hoist Operation course
- Recording
- Emptying and Cleaning tanks
“It was a really worthwhile experience which gave me a lot of confidence. I developed my skills in nautical archaeology which is ultimately the career that I would be keen to pursue. I am now working for the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust in Swansea which is great.”
