Parthian Books took on Julie Stocks through the work taster programme to help them gain an insight into the world of publishing.
“At the time of the taster Parthian was in the midst of the book launch for their latest book Dial M for Merthyr by Rachel Trezise. I was given the opportunity to work on the publicity team for the many events Parthian had planned for the book launch.”
“I was given a lot of insight into the publishing industry, it helped me to realise that publishing is not as glamorous at it seems. There is a lot of hard work involved, and more people than you might realise working to publish book. It makes me wonder how many people work on the Harry Potter books!”
“I still haven't decided which direction my career will take, but I hope that my future work with Parthian with help me to clarify more as they are giving me freelance employment for rights work, which is what I was initially interested in, but due to time constraints was unable to work in that department.”
“It was a very rewarding experience that really gave me an insight into the publishing industry and its machinations. I am now working in a bookshop part time and working freelance for Parthian. I'm still not sure what I will be doing over the next few years but I have considered going back to university to do an MA.”
Dominic Williams Marketing Director gave his account of the work taster, he said:
“Julie Stocks and Lindsay Ward came to us as a team to gain experience of a publishing company. Julie's specific interest was in copyright and Lindsay's in academic editing we tried to address those needs as part of the taster but it is a short time and we also like to give a flavour of the whole of the business.”
“Julie had great success in her interaction with print media, successfully placing a story with Cambrian News Aberystwyth. Other involvement with events organisations included helping to man a stall at a literary event in Chapter Arts Centre Cardiff.”
“Julie may be doing some freelance work for Parthian Books over the next couple of months searching copyright for some poetry on International Anthology.”
