22 graduates recently took part in a unique tailor made course launched by GO Wales to help begin their freelancing careers in Wales. The programme was delivered at Glamorgan University by a team of consultants and consisted of two; three day courses to help the budding freelancers develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to take their business ideas forward.

During the course all participants had the chance to attain the internationally recognised; Institute of Leadership and Management Level 3 qualification.

Gemma June Howell is in the process of setting up a quarterly magazine and promotions business, she applied for the freelancer’s course to help give her an understanding of how to take her business ideas forward.

Gemma explains:

Why did you initially want to take part in the Freelancers course?

“I have been a struggling artist, in and out of employment for some time now, and have had many ideas on how I could contribute to, and possibly improve the arts scene in Wales. The Freelancers Academy seemed to come just at the right time and has given me valuable direction and confidence to progress with my Business, MYscellaneoUS Publishing & Promotions.”

What skills and abilities did you develop as a result of the course?

“I was able to easily identify my strengths and weaknesses, which sounds simple but has been exceptionally beneficial both professionally and personally. The consultants also gave me useful advice on how to manage my time effectively and more importantly, how to structure and sell my business plan. They built me up and stripped me down; providing a personal service and offering support both during and after the course.”

Do you think the course will help you with your future plans?

“Yes- most definitely! I have a Level 3 Qualification from the Institute of Leadership & Management, and free membership to the ILM where I have access to a variety of business related support, advice and discounts. I have also extended my network and met other freelancers who are working within my business right now. The course exceeded my expectations and is a positive initiative for small business and entrepreneurs in Wales.”

Would you recommend the course to others who may be thinking of freelancing?

“I would. The GO Wales team provided a tailored service to people like me, who are just starting out. The course was inspirational yet practical, and served as an introductory springboard for aspiring entrepreneurs in Wales.”

Is there anything that you would like to add?

“I would just like to thank GO Wales for the opportunity because without them I would still be going round in circles and selling myself short. I look forward to taking part in any future initiatives where I can progress and develop my skills. I now anticipate the future of MYscellaneoUS Publishing & Promotions, which aims to seek, polish and launch the careers of talented artists in contemporary Wales today.”
