Melin Homes is a housing association based in South East Wales. They own and manage close to 3,000 homes across five local authority areas and provide a wide range of housing solutions and high quality services.
The company was looking for a graphic design graduate to assist in the design and production of corporate literature and support the communications officer with various PR and marketing activities.
Michael learnt about design processes from the conception of an idea to completion and gained experience in organising file types for print. He developed a range of skills which impressed his employer and led to a full time position with the company.
“I spent my 10 week placement working as a Graphic Designer at Melin Homes. During this time I was involved in a range of design projects and gained experience in using new software, developing concepts, preparing artwork for print and dealing with clients and printers. I also gained valuable experience of the working environment of a day to day designer.”
“At the end of the 10 weeks I was offered a full time position at Melin as a Graphic Design Assistant. I've been here nine months now and have continued to develop my design skills and have just been seconded into a higher position to cover a colleague's maternity leave. My experience of GO Wales has been very positive as they have enabled me to get into the field of work of which I studied. Work experience is essential in Graphic Design but not always easy to come by and GO Wales has enabled me to get a foot on the ladder of my chosen career.”
Michael exceeded all expectations during his initial 10 week placement, Helen Ball Communications Officer explains:

Within weeks we had we had an excellent graduate in place who fully matched our requirements.
