City and Guilds

Introduction

We offer you the opportunity to gain a City and Guilds work-based qualification during your work placement. The City and Guilds Professional Development Award is a higher level award which allows students and graduates to quantify their experiences and development while on work placement.

This award formally recognises and demonstrates to employers, the transferable skills and knowledge that you gain through work experience. It helps you take an active role in your own personal and professional learning and development.

Why take part?

Benefits for you:

  • It is an award recognised by employers and will help to enhance your CV
  • The award will provide you with a framework you can use in future positions
  • Helps to build a good working relationship with your manager as you both work towards common objectives
  • GO Wales cover the cost of the award
  • It doesn't take long to complete!

What is involved?

You are given a 1-2-1 induction within your workplace by the GO Wales Training Officer, allowing for an individualised training programme to be developed.

You would be expected to complete the Award throughout the placement by submitting various pieces of work including:

  • Self Audit
  • Personal Development Plan (Objective Setting)
  • Interim Report
  • Final Report (2000 - 3000 words)
  • Reflective Log

You are then encouraged to work closely with your managers to ensure that both parties gain the most from the placement experience. In many cases, employers and placees have been able to work together to monitor performance at an early stage, which develops the working relationship and emphasises the standards required within the organisation.

Benefits

With more and more graduates entering the labour market each year employers are increasingly looking for more than a degree. However, it is not necessarily just work experience they seek, but what students have learned from the experience. Therefore by reflecting on you placement you are gaining skills that will increase your employability.

The City and Guilds qualification requires you to focus upon your personal and professional development aims and all participants have seen real progress towards their goals. This clearly has benefits for your personal and career development but your employer will also benefit as you are a more capable employee.

Positive feedback!

“What a wonderful idea, doing a GO Wales placement whilst earning a qualification. I personally found that the C&G Professional Development award very useful in my placement as it kept me focussed on attaining certain objectives throughout and as a result allowed me to gain more from my 10 week placement. I would recommend it to anyone doing a GO Wales placement.

“I would recommend GO Wales placements to anyone. It is a fantastic opportunity to 'test out' a job and allows the placee to enter the experience onto their CV. Many jobs on offer require the applicant to have acquired experience, the Go Wales placements allow this to be achieved.”

Amanda Copson, Environmental Education Officer, National Wetlands Centre for Wales

“The placement was an excellent opportunity to get some degree level work experience and I would recommend the scheme and the associated Professional Development Award, to anyone considering it, particularly if it is related to the degree they have done or the career sectors they wish enter.”

“I think that giving anybody the ability to improve personal skills and be acknowledged for the effort they have put in is always a good idea no matter what their previous experience or qualification.”

“It's a fantastic opportunity for all placees to gain a recognised qualification from the work they have contributed and the skills they have obtained from the placement.”

“It is worth taking part in the C&G award. It does show that an individual can respond well to a new working environment with an aim of getting a further qualification.”
