Obsidian Research is a Swansea based research organisation that provides specialist testing and contract research services to companies in the food industry.
Lei Jiang took part in a five day work taster with Obsidian to develop her research skills.
“I undertook a taster as I needed the chance to gain some experience and prepare myself for the UK job market. I have a masters in biology engineering and the work taster with Obsidian gave me the opportunity to focus on a research project which helped me to further develop my skills.”
“I worked as part of a team to further develop a comprehensive quality control system for vitamin fish oil, which includes fatty acid analysis by gas chromatography, assessment of the oxidation status by using spectrophotometer and viable cell count of microbes.”
“It was a very worthwhile experience which particularly helped me to practice my English. I think it's very important to give new graduates the opportunity to gain experience in their degree disciplines. I have gained more knowledge as a result which has helped me to increase my employability and decide if I would like to carry on with postgraduate study.”
Sue Plummer director of Obsidian is so pleased with Lei's work she is going to offer her a work placement.
“Tasters offer a great way to see somebody in a functioning role; it allows you to assess how a person develops within the organisation before making a longer term commitment. Lei's taster has worked really well and we are going to offer her a work placement as a result.”
