Johnson Yap was employed by specialist developer of prestigious properties London & Oriental as a Trainee Civil Engineer.
Johnson originally from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia wanted to learn more about the working culture in Wales and seized the opportunity with a work placement. This was Johnson's first experience of working in Wales.
“The placement provided me with some very good experience to understand the industry. I had the opportunity to work on the engineering and administrative side of the business in the office. My main tasks were:”
- Overseeing the workmanship and site progression
- Producing CAD drawings
- Coordinating with Architecture
- General Administration in the office
“Undertaking these tasks allowed me to experience the working culture in this country; I enjoyed interacting with colleagues, working partners and clients which has enhanced my communication skills. I learnt to fit into the real world of work.”
Alan Hill the site manager at London & Oriental was impressed with Johnson's commitment to his placement:
“Johnson was technically very good on computer packages like CAD; he was flexible and had a very positive outlook. He was hard working and dedicated often working late if necessary.”
“We found the scheme to be excellent in providing hands on experience to placees like Johnson who, with SMEs in particular, can provide an invaluable insight into business and a positive bridge between academia and working environments.”
