Interviews

The vast majority of employers will wish to interview candidates before starting a Work Placement. Sometimes, an organisation planning to host a Work Taster will also request to meet a candidate beforehand. An employer will view your application and then invite the best candidates for interview. These interviews are just as important as any other and require preparation and planning to ensure you make the best impression.

What is an interview?

An interview is normally carried out on a face-to-face basis (though occasionally by ‘phone), in a relatively formal setting and the conversation that takes place is largely based upon the interview(ers) asking the questions and controlling the conversation. You are there to answer these questions and demonstrate that you are the best person for the position.

An interview is an artificial situation where you have a short space of time to show the interviewer that you have the skills, experience and educational background required along with the requisite communication and social skills.

Remember, an interviewer wants you to do well. They are not looking to catch you out – they have asked you to the interview and are impressed by your application. This is your opportunity to ‘close the deal’.
