GO Wales Work Placements

Taff Valley Quad Bike and Activity Centre is a well-established family run business established in 1992. It's a 360 acres working hill farm, which still farms 600 sheep and 100 cattle. In the past 15 years the centre has expanded significantly to include activities such as Quad Bike treks out through the countryside and a junior Quad Bike circuit.

Project objective 1

Carlyn Treloar embarked on her first GO Wales work placement with Taff Valley in her second year of study her main duties were to help with the overall running of the busy office, deal with enquiries via the helpline and sort out the company accounts.

Project objective 2

Carlyn had a second placement with the company once she graduated which involved looking into developing Wales Activity Breaks a new business that focuses on activity packages to suit a wide range of needs.

Project outcome

Archery at Adventure Wales

Carlyn Treloar developed her own business Wales Activity Breaks as a result of a placement with Taff Valley Quad Bike and Activity Centre.

“Working for a small company gave me the opportunity to work in all areas of the business. I didn't just want to be the marketing person or the accounts person I always wanted my own business. From working with Taff Valley I got to know a lot of people with activity centres, hotels etc which helped me to set up Wales Activity Breaks.”

“I started to get in touch with some of the businesses that Taff Valley already had a relationship with such as activity centres and hotels who were happy to work with me. I opened the necessary bank accounts, set up a domain name and started building links with suppliers.”

“The business now offers a range of activities and places to stay across Wales with clients including stag and hen groups, families, corporate, youth groups etc. The business has been running for a year now and is very busy. We're expanding the office so that we can eventually take on more people.”

“Without taking part in the GO Wales work placement scheme I wouldn't be doing this today, it gave me the opportunity to experience a real working environment from all angles.”
